IIM CASE STUDY

The Spectrum Club – Chromatography

“A theory can be proven by experiment; but no path leads from experiment to the birth of a theory.” – Albert Einstein

Chromatography has various applications. It is used for the separation of different colours of ink. It is also used to identify and separate the preservatives and additives added in the food items. Paper chromatography is used as a technique for identifying and separating coloured mixtures like pigments. It is used in scientific studies to identify unknown organic and inorganic compounds from a mixture.

Based on this technique the Spectrum Club members of Class II and III experimented. They were informed about the ingredients required for the experiment. Children used different strips of tissue paper and different colours on it. When these strips were dipped in a glass of water the colours started to spread or separate to get different colours. They could also see different colours when they used black colours on the tissue paper. Children enjoyed experimenting in the class. The experiment was a great success. Such simple experiments allow students to inculcate experimental temperament at a young age itself.
