“The Sun, with all those Planets revolving around it, and dependant upon it, can still ripen a bunch of grapes as if it has nothing else in the Universe to do.” – Galileo Galilei
The students of KG II learnt about the importance of Sun during the theme time, which was on the mighty Sun. The students were asked open-ended questions like what would happen if sun would not be there? How their lives will be without sun? etc.
The responses of the students were noted down followed by a discussion on the importance of the Sun. Some points discussed were, Sun is the main source of heat and light, in its absence plants can’t make their food, there would be no light etc. They also learnt that the mighty ball of fire which is found in the centre of the solar system keeps our planet warm enough so that living things can survive.
Students were able to understand that sunlight is not only useful for all the living things but also used for heating, cooking, drying, and to produce electricity. The learning was reinforced through an audio-visual clipping and finally taking the children out to the school garden to experience the warmth of the Sun. The little ones felt the scorching heat after standing for some time and realised that though it is far from people, yet it has a strong effect.
To make the topic more interesting the students were given yellow colour papers to make Sun. Through this activity kids developed their interpersonal and intrapersonal skills, visual skills and fine motor skills.
