Spectrum Club – Having fun with fluid movement

“Science is about asking your own questions and making your own investigation, two things young children are very good at” – Asia Citro.

This week in the  Spectrum club we first started with the experiment of how to make a blooming paper flower. This magic flower experiment is powered by a scientific phenomenon called ‘Capillary action’ a process of paper absorbing water very rapidly. When the paper gets wet, it swells, causing the folded petals of your magic flower to open up. After showing the experiment by one of the teachers from Class I, children were able to do the experiment on their own and they were enjoying it also. They also use different colour paper. Teacher at the end of the activity asked to do this experiment with different types of paper like thin and thick paper and also asked the children to explain the difference in the next class.

Experiments fail sometimes but that does not mean to stop. In SAI Angan students are now doing their experiments by themselves. After the first experiment ,one student of Class II  did the ‘Anti-gravity’ water experiment. Most of the students could do it by themselves and they were also able to explain the science behind it.. After this time, one student of Class III started the experiment of’ Volcano Eruption’. This  experiment is done with vinegar, baking soda (ENO, or dish soap can be used as an alternative to baking soda) and the food colouring. Most of the children are able to do the experiment and towards the end of the meeting students were asked to find the reason why this happened? As we know that when we apply science to find the solution to the  question like ‘how’, ‘why’, ‘when’, only then our children can find out the ability to solve the question on their own which has always been the objective of the teachers of SAI Angan.
