IIM CASE STUDY

Spectrum Club – Capillary Action

“Give the pupils something to do, not something to learn; and the doing is of such a nature as to demand thinking; learning naturally results”.John Daway

The Class II and III members of Spectrum Club conducted an experiment on capillary action during their activity class on Saturday, August 29, 2020. Capillary action describes the ability of a liquid to flow against gravity in narrow spaces.

SAIoneers were asked to keep ready the ingredients for experiment beforehand. The children took three glasses with one cup of water each. Next they added a few drops of one particular food color to one of the glasses, similarly they added two different colours of food colour to the other glasses.

Next they dipped vertically folded paper towels in each of the glasses. They put one end in the coloured water and one end in the empty glass. The members observed that the water climbed the paper towels and moved from one cup of water to another through “capillary action”. Children learnt many things about capillary action and enjoyed the class thoroughly.
