A Science Activity – Phases of the Moon

“The Moon is the first milestone on the road to the stars.” – Arthur C. Clarke

The moon takes nearly a month (29.5 days) to completely revolve around the earth, its shape seems to keep changing throughout the month. This happens when the part of the moon getting the sunlight is visible to us. The shape of the moon changes as follows; Full Moon-Gibbous Moon-Half Moon-Crescent Moon-New Moon. The cyclic process in which the visible part grows is called waxing and the process in which the visible part diminishes is called waning.

The students of Class III participated in an activity in which they made a paper collage showing the phases of the moon. The materials used were- black chart paper, A4 size white paper, and some glitter. The white papers were cut out into different shapes of the moon, were arranged and pasted around a paper cut into the shape of earth.  The black chart paper was used as the night sky. Glitters were used to represent the stars in the sky.

The phases of the moon were named accordingly. The students did the activity with a lot of interest and asked many questions related to the movement of the moon. The activity was a huge success as the kids had a lot of interaction and engagement while learning with all their heart. It was indeed a fruitful session.
