Spectrum Club – Adhesion and Cohesion

“Everything is theoretically impossible until it is done.” – Robert. A. Heinlein

Cohesion as a concept states that water is attracted to water, while on the other hand, adhesion is when water is attracted to other substances. Adhesion and cohesion are properties of water that affect every water molecule on Earth and also the interaction of water molecules with other substances.

The Class I members of the Spectrum Club tried to understand this property through an experiment. They took two empty glasses, one string, one Sellotape and one cup of water. They attached both the ends of the string through the Sellotape with both the glasses and one glass was filled up with water and the other was empty. Children tried to fill the empty glass through the string and they observed that the water was falling through the string and filling up the empty glass. It is due to adhesion that the molecule of the string is attracted to the molecules of water. This experiment helped the children understand these concepts with more clarity and grab concepts better. It was a very interactive and exciting class for all the students.
