IIM CASE STUDY

Spectrum Club – Experiential Learning

“Learning is the process whereby knowledge is created through the transformation of experience.” David A. Kolb

Learning through experience has a profound impact on the knowledge horizon of students. The Spectrum club members enjoy doing various activities and experiments during their club classes. In one such activity, the Class I members conducted the ‘frozen water and salt experiment’, on Saturday, October 17, 2020.

Usually when we take out frozen water to normal temperature it melts, but it takes some time. However, when we add salt to the frozen water it melts quickly. Children did this experiment along with teachers and enjoyed it a lot. When salt was added to the ice, it melted quickly. They were surprised and thrilled to see the melting ice experiment.

The Classes II and III members learnt about sound vibration during their club classes held on Saturday, October 17, 2020. Sound is a form of energy which produces a sensation of hearing in our ears. Sound is produced due to the vibration of objects and vibrations are rapid to and fro motion of an object. When a body vibrates, a disturbance is created in the medium by the particles, which produces sound.

The enthusiastic members learnt about sounds and how it travels through different mediums. They did two experiments on sounds and from the first experiment they learnt how a simple paper cup phone works by transmitting sound vibrations along a tightly-pulled string. The bottom of each cup serves as a combination “microphone” and “speaker,” picking up sound vibrations on one and producing the sound on the other. It is also a great way to understand how telephones and radio work.

In the second experiment the members learnt how to make a straw flute. They blew air on different sizes of straws and from this they learnt that the shorter the instrument the higher the sound. A straw flute makes a sound when you blow air over the holes. Longer straws create different pitch sound than shorter straws because the time taken for the vibrations to travel up and down the straw is different.
