Phonics refers to the relationship between letters and individual sound. Phonetics lays the foundation for learning new words. As the young learners became readers they need to understand the relationship between the letters and sounds in order to read words.
Activities are conducted for the Nursery children to help them become familiar with the letter sounds ‘c’ and ‘k’. Initially the letter sounds were introduced through a phonic story. As the letter sound ‘c’ and ‘k’ are quite tricky, they were introduced to the sound ‘c’ as curly ‘c’ and ‘k’ as kicking ‘k’.
An activity was conducted in which the letter sounds were written on the floor and children were given flash cards and were told to place the cards on the appropriate letter sound.
In the next activity children were given cotton balls on which letter sounds were pasted and they were instructed to pick up the cotton ball with the help of a cloth pin and enact the respective letter sound. At the end of the activity, children were confident about the letter sound with proper action. These activities helped them to enhance their fine motor skills.
