Phases of Moon

“But even when the moon looks like it’s waning…it’s actually never changing shape. Don’t ever forget that.” –Ai Yazawa, Nana, Vol. 14

The gleaming Moon which waxes and wanes is a natural satellite of the Earth. It is a heavenly body that revolves around the Earth and has no light of its own. It shines with the reflected light of the Sun and appears in different shapes on different days. Children learnt about our very own “Chanda Mama” specified in their science Chapter- Stars, Planets and the Moon, through a classroom activity. They learnt about the different phases of Moon with the help of audio-visuals.

An activity on phases of Moon was conducted to reinforce the learning. It started with dividing the students into small groups. Students were provided with black and white chart papers. They meticulously cut those papers into small circles and shaded it to give different shapes of all the major phases. Then they placed it as per sequence. Students thoroughly enjoyed the activity and learnt a new concept in a very interesting way.
