IIM CASE STUDY

Food Chain

A Food Chain is a chain from a food source to the ultimate consumer and can be described as a series of living things which are linked to each other, as each one feeds on the next to it in the series. It is a single pathway of energy transfer that represents the exchange of energy from one organism to another. A group activity was conducted for students of Class-III where they learnt about food chain and how it interlinks between animal kingdom of land, water and desert. They also got to know the process of passing energy from one organism to other and the interdependence of one organism over the other. Students drew pictures of consumers as well as producers, the two important components of the food chain. They drew pictures of producers, like plants, which are eaten by consumers, like animals, which enabled them to understand how energy passes from plant to animal kingdom. The eager children drew various food chains which can be seen on land, water, as well as in desert. They very well understood that food chain always describes a single pathway, ie, it starts with a primary producer and ends with a top predator.
