IIM CASE STUDY

Creating Phonological Awareness

Understanding the basic sound of individual letters is an important skill in learning to read. It is the ability to pay attention to identify and use sounds of speech. Through letters, sounds and actions, the students of KG – I were taught about phonics. They are made to practice the sounds of both uppercase and lowercase letters through picture cards and audio visual aids. Students were given the wooden cut-outs of lowercase letters on a random basis and asked to say the sound of the letter, they were holding. After that all the uppercase letters were spread on the floor and the children were called one by one holding their lowercase letters to match those with the respective uppercase letters. Such activities help the children to develop their Linguistic, Visual, Intra personal and Kinesthetic skills.
