The Travelling Light

“Scientists have become the bearers of the torch of discovery in our quest for knowledge.”-Stephen Hawking

The students of Class III participated in an experiment to prove that light travels in a straight line. With the teacher’s guidance they conducted the experiment on their own. The materials required were 3 old CD’s, 6 cloth clips and a candle or torch. Some children used a torch instead of candles and lit it. The CD’s were placed in a straight line with the help of the cloth clips as stands. They were placed in such a way that the flame of the candle/torch and the holes of the CD’s were in one straight line. The students were then asked to look through the holes. They could see the flame of the candle. This was because light from the candles reached their eyes in straight lines. Then the CD’s were displaced a little from their original positions. When the students again peeped through the holes of the CD’s, they could not see the flame anymore. This was because the light from the flame got obstructed and could not reach their eyes. Thus, it was proved that light travels in a straight line.
The students were very excited to carry out this experiment as they were ready with the materials and conducted the experiment with perfection, ease and a lot of vigour. They learned from the experiment that light travels only in a straight line and had all their light related doubts cleared.

All the children even shared facts about light that they had found out on their own. It was an immense pleasure to observe their scientific behaviour and excitement to prove scientific facts. The experiment was a huge success and our children participated and excelled with flying colours. Experiments like these ensure that the child grows in a way that his/her foundations of concepts are absolutely clear. Ensuring the child’s holistic growth.
