Ignited Minds Club – Improve your Handwriting

“Handwriting is an imprint of self on page.”Dr. Rosemary Sassoon

Handwritten communication has been the most primitive media of expressing oneself. In this high-tech era the pen seems to be replaced by the thumb, touch screens and keyboards. But the fact continues to remain that you need to be familiar with the correct formation of every letter and word to reproduce thoughts through typing. And this can only be best learned by using a pencil or pen in the school days. The brain engages differently when we write something by hand as opposed to typing it on a keyboard or touching a screen.

The Class I, II and III members of the Ignited Minds club debated on the topic ‘Is it important to improve your handwriting? Why?’, during their weekly club classes held on Saturday, September 12, 2020. The kids debated with a lot of vigour both for and against the topic.

From writing down assignments, to jotting down a shopping list and filling a bank form, handwriting is a part of our daily lives. It may be used to make judgements about a person. Students do need to write in a legible handwriting so as to make it easier for the teachers to assess their work. It stands for teachers as well. It has been proved that writing improves memory and helps retain learning better. When we write down a card to pass on wishes and compliments, a good handwriting makes the person on the receiving end happier.

Illegible handwriting in many cases can lead to passing on wrong messages and unclear communication. When intellectuals like doctors prescribe medications in illegible handwriting it leads to patients buying and consuming wrong medicines and that leads to health complications which is a serious issue. Moreover good handwriting makes communication easy which is what writing is all about. The kids were super confident to speak against the topic.

They put forward very convincing points to contradict the fact that improving one’s writing is not that important. Handwriting, if legible, is enough to pass on information and people could focus on more important skills instead of making their handwriting beautiful. Those against the topic made their stand with the fact that, as students, good handwriting does not matter if their content is wrong. Hence, the debate ended with the note that improving one’s handwriting is important so as to make it legible enough for others to read.

The students were true to themselves and very straight-forward while keeping in mind the important aspect of communication through writing. It was a pleasure listening to their confident discussion.
