Solubility of Water

“Nothing is softer or more flexible than water, yet nothing can resist it.”- Lao Tzu

Students are aware of the importance of water and the fact that water is an invaluable gift of nature to all living beings. We all need water to clean ourselves, drink and stay alive. Through interesting activities, students of Class-II were introduced to the topic ‘Solubility of Water’.

In the first activity, students made lemonade. They were given a glass of water, some salt and some sugar. They were asked to mix all the ingredients.  They found that sugar and salt completely dissolved in water. Next, they were given lemon to squeeze in the water, again they found that lemon juice also got dissolved in the sugar-salt mixture.

In the second activity they were given a glass of water and some amount of sand and a few pebbles. They were told to mix those in water and they found that neither sand nor pebbles got dissolved in water.

From the two fun-filled activities the students were able to understand that certain things cannot dissolve in water while certain things can dissolve easily in water which is known as solubility of water.
