IIM CASE STUDY

All About Senses

Our five senses enable us to observe and understand the world around us. It allows us to enjoy our food (with our tongue), listen to good music (with our ears), feel the soft fur of toy teddy bear (with our fingers), see the beautiful picture hanging on the wall (with our eyes) or smell the aroma of our favourite perfume (with our nose). The Nursery children were introduced to the importance of senses starting with the sense of smell. They were asked questions like, “I sit in the middle of the face and we smell with it. Can you guess who am I”? The children unanimously answered ‘Nose’. Children were taught about the importance of nose as well as many other factors associated with the sense organ. They got to know that the sense of smell tells us about our environment. To help them reinforce the concept an activity was conducted in which they were asked to smell different objects placed in the room and tell whether they liked the smell or not. They liked the good smell of perfume, room freshener, incense sticks, flowers etc and disliked the bad smells of onion, garlic, fevicol etc. Children thoroughly enjoyed the highly interactive lesson which also helped them enhance their naturalistic and visual skill.
