“When you have mastered numbers, you will in fact no longer be reading numbers, any more than you read words when reading books, you will be reading meanings.” – W. E. B. Du Bois
A number is a mathematical object used to count and measure. Expanded form is a way of writing numbers so that we can see the value of each digit in the number. The expanded form of a number is represented as the sum of each digit.
Today Class II children have done one activity related to ‘Expanded form’. Students wrote standard forms of 3-digits numbers in square chits of papers. They expanded those numbers by using 3 arrow cards. Then they pasted standard form and expanded form of that particular number in their scrapbook. Children also gave ‘+’ symbols between the place values of each digit.
Our SAIoneers have enjoyed the activity fully with great enthusiasm. They understood the concept nicely and actively participated. They also understood that expanded form is important in Math because it allows them to look at a number and identify the value of each digit.
